Register books for office: A4, FS and A5 sizes explained
Which register book should your office, shop or school in Qatar buy? A simple guide to A4, FS and A5 sizes, thickness, uses like visitor logs and notebook options.
Even with computers everywhere, offices, shops, schools and building receptions in Qatar still use paper register books every day. They are simple, they never need charging, and anyone can use them. Here is how to choose the right one.
What are register books used for?
- Visitor log at reception or the building gate.
- Cash book for daily cash in and out at a shop counter.
- Stock register for items in and out of a store room or warehouse.
- Attendance for staff, drivers or students.
- Delivery and courier log to note what came in and who signed.
- Meeting minutes and daily work notes.
Sizes: A4, FS, A5 and more
| Size | Good for |
|---|---|
| A4 | Most office registers, stock and cash books |
| FS (foolscap) | A little longer than A4. More lines per page for long lists |
| A5 | Small and light. Good for drivers, site staff and small counters |
| 9x7 and other small sizes | Quick notes and small desks |
What does QR mean on a register?
You will see names like 2QR, 3QR, 4QR or 6QR. The number tells you how thick the book is: a bigger number means more pages. Pick a thin book for a small job and a thick one for a log you will use all year, like a visitor register. If you are not sure, look at the page count on the book, or ask us.
Hard cover or soft cover?
For a register that stays at a busy reception or shop counter for months, choose a strong hard cover. It does not bend, and pages stay safe even when many people write in it every day. Soft cover notebooks are lighter and better for carrying in a bag.
Tips for a good register
- Write the start date and purpose on the cover.
- Number the pages if they are not numbered, so nothing goes missing.
- Use a ball pen, not a gel pen or marker, so writing does not smudge. See ball pen or gel pen.
- Keep finished registers in a box file with the dates on the side.
- Keep one spare register in the cupboard so you never run out.
Notebooks for staff and students
For personal notes, a notebook is lighter than a register. Choose:
- A5 notebooks for meetings and daily notes.
- Spiral notebooks that open flat on the desk.
- Subject notebooks with tabs, good for students and for staff who handle several projects.
- Arabic and English line notebooks for school work.
